Usually I am a quick learner. It’s part of what made me a great student and what allows me to crank out content at a pretty fast pace. When I encounter something that I’m not that great at however, I have a tendency to be hypercritical of myself. This is counterproductive to my journey as an entrepreneur. This self-employment life is one big world of uncertainty, constant learning and trial and error. The following are some tips that I use to not be so critical of myself when what I’m trying isn’t turning out the way I thought it would.
1. Everything is a learning process
I’ve had to learn so many new programs, vocabulary, and practices in the last year and while I’m super proud of the strides I have made, I know there is SO MUCH more to learn and there is ALWAYS going to be something new no matter how long I’m in business. There’s a reason why there are so many versions of computer programs. There’s always room for improvement. I can’t be afraid of not knowing. I have to get in there and figure it out.
2. Learn to enjoy the uncertainty
A lot of being in business is stepping out on faith and confidence in your product or service. I don’t always feel confident when I have to face a group to teach or talk about what I do because I think at the end of the day, all entrepreneurs suffer from a bit of impostor syndrome. Even when I have concrete proof of my results I still wonder if I’m doing the right thing. I think it’s because there’s no one to check in with, no one to proofread your work. It’s relying on your skills and your belief in yourself and that can be a scary thing.
3. Some things just aren’t going to work...and that’s a good thing!
When I get something right on the first try, I move on to the next task. I don’t really give much thought to the whole process of how I arrived at success. But when something doesn’t go according to plan; I have to stop, go back, and examine my previous actions to see how I can get a positive result. Failing forces me to become an expert so I don’t make the same mistake again.
